The Sci-Fi Fantasy Special Interest Group
(SIG) is a loose association of modellers who share an interest in model
kits where the subject is not necessarily a real world one - the worlds of
imagination and speculative fiction of which Science Fiction and Fantasy
are the main fields. Although the name does not say so, the SIG includes and welcomes modellers whose interests lie in the fields of horror, monster movies, comic books, TV/film and anime as well as all corners of the Sci-Fi and fantasy genres - including (but not limited to) “hard” Sci-Fi hardware and figures, Sci-Fi inspired hardware and figures, fighting fantasy, mythical fantasy, alternate universe, humorous fantasy… |
|
The aim of the SIG is mainly to provide
these modellers with a group within the I.P.M.S (U.K) where they can
discuss and display their kits. A quarterly, hardcopy newsletter is
produced, containing articles written by members on a variety of subjects
(but mainly reviews of new kits and “how to” articles on kits that
they’ve built). The SIG will provide a display at the Scale
Model World and as many other IPMS and non-IPMS shows as its members are
willing and able to attend. Any member can represent the SIG at a show,
providing they stick with the spirit of the SIG detailed here. In order to maintain the family nature of
the shows it attends, the SIG will not display figures showing full
frontal nudity (male or female), out of character/context full or partial
nudity (such as nude or topless TV characters) or kits in the extreme
“fetish fantasy” genre. SIG members are welcome to write about these
kits for the newsletter, but in the spirit of the IPMS family image, its
considered that they are not suitable for display at shows. Scantily clad
males and females are acceptable at shows, but all members are asked to
consider the family nature of most if not all IPMS shows and show some
discretion in the content. The SIG leader will edit the newsletter,
maintain and distribute a contacts list, arrange the main SIG display at
SMW and provide material for other displays (in terms of copy newsletters,
signs, membership forms, etc). SIG members are encouraged to promote the
world of Sci-Fi/Fantasy modelling in whatever forum they see fit (writing
for the IPMS magazine or other modelling magazines, websites, entering
model contests, etc). Due to the subject matter covered, the SIG can
attract people who have not considered modelling before to the hobby
(that’s how I got here…). While it’s not specifically in our remit,
we should make every effort to encourage this interest and look to bring
new blood into the modelling hobby where we can.
